Paying to bring my own clothes
I travel a lot, usually cheap and usually alone, and I was tired of finding a good flight and then handing over fifty to a hundred dollars just to bring clothes with me.
So I did what everyone does. Overpack the carry on and hope it fits the sizer. Wear the bulkiest things through the airport. Stuff the pockets. Repack on the floor at the gate when it does not measure up.
Airlines make billions a year on bag fees. That is not a fee, that is a system. Once you see it you cannot unsee it.
The idea
It had to be a coat
There is already a lot of great travel gear out there. A good backpack, a good duffle, compression bags that work. I was not trying to replace any of it. I wanted something that adds to what you already carry.
The problem is that all of it counts as a bag. Airlines charge you for what you carry, not for what you have on. So the answer was never going to be another bag. It had to be something you wear, with enough storage inside it to actually pack into.
Figuring out how to do that without it looking ridiculous took eight months.
What it took
Nothing here is an accident
It started with a blank coat and a pen. How many pockets actually fit. How much space between them. Which ones hold clothes and which ones hold your phone and your passport.
Then the stitching. Every corner reinforced, because a pocket that fails when it is full is not a pocket. And it still had to look normal. Packed or empty, it looks like a regular coat, not a costume. Somewhere between a parka and an everyday jacket, not down to your shins.
Every version got laid flat and measured by hand. Down to the smallest inch.
What makes it special
The part that makes it a VoyageCoat
The coat saves you the bag fee. But you only need to wear it through check in, security, and boarding. Nobody wants to walk an airport in a fully packed coat, let alone sit a whole flight in one.
That is where the engineering came in. Selling a bag alongside the coat would just be two things to carry. So the bag is built into the coat, in between the lining. Unzip the bottom, the bag comes out still attached, and the packed coat folds straight into it.
Wear it when you need it. Carry it when you do not. That is the whole design.
